The macabre atmospheres crafted by China-based artist Yikii in her new LP The Crow - Cyan Lake 鸦青湖畔 evokes uncanniness with a strangely twisted sense of comfort. Like a deranged cousin of Chopin's Nocturnes, the record depicts an odd serenity amidst sounds of chaos of a night scene at a lake. Crows eerily prowl the surroundings, bones litter the shores, soundtracked by dismembered erhu and sitar samples, toy cameras, and sinister, blasting brass. Yikii's intricate compositions are woven through meticulous sound design and unconventional tonality drawing from the traditional music of China and the depths of chromatic, microtonal darkness. Binding the comfort of tradition and the fear of the unknown, this new Yikii record suspends you in a mystifying limbo in an unknown wilderness of China where the spirits dwell and whisper to you their mangled history.
